• Can anyone tell me WHY WE HAVE THE UPPER CASE AND LOWER CASE LETTERS IN ENGLISH when most of the other languages are quite comfortable with just one kind?

    Response 1: Maybe due to stiff upper lip.when the upper lip gets too stiff,they use the lower lip!just kidding..

    Originally alphabets were written entirely in capital letters, spaced between well-defined upper and lower bounds. When written quickly with a pen, these tended to turn into rounder and much simpler forms, like uncials. It is from these that the first minuscule hands developed, the half-uncials and cursive minuscule, which no longer stay bound between a pair of lines. These in turn formed the foundations for the Carolingian minuscule script, developed by Alcuin for use in the court of Charlemagne, which quickly spread across Europe...



    Response 3: Uncials ,more than being an extention of the upper case were actually inspired by the latin script but they were original in every sense of the word.What i dont understand is the English obsession with the upper case.Alphabets have gone through transformations but the English,instead of transforming the script tailed the Caps along!If you look at the current situation of little learners ,they are burdened with the task of learning 26+26 letters.Teachers should just focus on the lower case and let the learner grasp the upper case when he feels he is ready for it.



    Response 4: CAPITAL HAS A PROBLEM like “MY, THE WEATHER IS NICE TODAY.” IS THIS DIFFICULT OR ANNOYING TO READ? The point is that we’ve become culturally habituated since the rise of Internet, if not before, to only ever express harsh speech with all capitals, so now we automatically link them with “shouting”...


    Response 5: size and structure of words hint so obviously at our moods.This is a generalized subjective opinion.i wonder why the English rather than transforming the letters chose to adopt a separate set all together.
